Turbidity Barrier
Floating Silt Curtain
Type 3 turbidity barriers are floating silt barriers made for strong water flow. They are used in fast-moving water areas with wind, waves, or tidal changes like rivers, coastal zones, bays, or harbors. These floating turbidity barriers help contain sediment and support environmental compliance.
We offer DOT compliant and Contractor grade (Economy) models with Permeable or Impermeable skirt options. The floating silt curtain comes in 50 or 100 foot sections, with depth options up to 100 feet. Each turbidity curtain is built to meet your site’s specific needs and make compliance on your site easy.
Type 3 Turbidity Barrier Details
Type 3 turbidity barriers are used in strong water conditions to control sediment in rivers, harbors, and tidal areas. Built with heavy-duty PVC fabric, steel ballast chain, large flotation, and dual tension cables, these floating silt barriers are made for long-term containment. Curtains are rated for use in currents up to 5 feet per second (FPS), depending on installation. Floating barrier panels come in 50 or 100 foot lengths with depths up to 100 feet. Customizable options are available to meet project or agency requirements.
We offer both impermeable and permeable models. Impermeable curtains use solid PVC to block water and contain all suspended sediment, while permeable versions geotextile, a filter fabric skirt that lets water pass through while capturing fines. The right choice depends on site flow conditions and regulatory needs.

Type 3 turbidity curtains are designed for use in challenging water environments with waves, tides, and strong current. These floating silt barriers are often required for public works and marine construction projects where sediment containment is critical for environmental protection and compliance.
Common applications include:
- Dredging in bays, harbors, or coastal zones
- Bridge and pier construction in moving water
- Marine restoration and shoreline stabilization
- DOT highway and causeway water crossings
Whether you need a DOT-certified impermeable curtain or a permeable option for tidal flow, we offer the right Type 3 turbidity curtain for your jobsite.
Type 3 Turbidity Barrier Frequently Asked Questions
The Type 3 heavy duty turbidity barrier is the strongest option available. It is specifically engineered for sites with high winds, strong currents, and frequent waves, offering the best protection in these conditions.
Standard turbidity barrier sections are available in 50' or 100' lengths. Depths range from 3' to 100', and custom configurations are available. The depth can also be adjusted on site using reefing lines.
